Shirley M. Malcom is Head of the Directorate for Education
and Human Resources Programs of the American Association for the Advancement
of Science. In 1995 Dr. Malcom was elected a fellow of the American Academy
of Arts and Sciences; she was appointed by President Clinton and confirmed
by the Senate as a member of the National Board and named to the President's
Committee of Advisors in Science and Technology. She also serves on several
boards, including American Museum of Natural History, Carnegie Corporation
of New York, and National Center on Education and the Economy, and is vice
chair of the executive committee and member of the governing board of the
New Standards Project. Prior to her current position, Dr. Malcom was head
of AAAS Office of Opportunities in Science. She has also served as program
officer in the Science Education Directorate of NSF, was assistant professor
of biology at the University of North Carolina in Wilmington, and was a
high school science teacher.
